Will it work with my vehicle?
The year a vehicle was made, and where it was sold, say which diagnostic line its OBD-II port is likely to speak. Tell us those, or type its VIN, and we say which box is likely to read it.
Cars and light trucks from 2008 on use CAN, which the logger reads. Older ones may use K-line, read by the K-line logger, or J1850, which neither box reads.
How we work it out
- OBD-II ports were required from 1996 in the United States, from 1998 for gasoline and 2004 for diesel in Canada, and from 2001 for gasoline and 2004 for diesel in Europe.
- From 2008 cars and light trucks in North America had to use CAN, which the logger reads.
- Before that, many used K-line (ISO 9141-2 or KWP2000), which the K-line logger reads, or J1850, which neither box reads.
- Heavy trucks, tractors and boats use J1939 or NMEA 2000: the logger reads them through a connector box with their own plug.
A guide, not a promise: makers did not all change in the same year. Not sure? Ask us with the make, model and year.
